Some people love Comic Sans and some people hate it. For full disclosure, we're not actually using Comic Sans, but a font called "Comic Relief", which is basically just Comic Sans (what a Relief!)
At first when I was looking through fonts, I was thinking closer to using Rethink Sans or Lemon.
I knew the goal was to find something light-hearted and playful, but also not lacking in legibility.
Rethink Sans felt too proper and orderly. Sharp lines and pointed edges make the font legible, but lacked the playfulness I was looking for.
Lemon ran in the opposite direction. Its rounded edges and almost marker-like feel to the way the letters form made it playful and fun, but used across multiple instances on the site, it felt messy, like being at a bounce house with 20 kids.
Unironically, Comic Relief felt like it fit what I was looking for —an instantly recognizable font that was playful, light-hearted, but still legible enough to use throughout the site.
It's a good description for what we stand for at Mindless Blob. The photos we take and share with people act like small glimpses into our reality. Though photos can be staged, the moments we capture ourselves tend to be simple memories that we want to remember — ones of laughter, excitement, or candid emotion.
We want our photos to look great and be as professional as possible, but a candid photo that's a bit silly and rough around the edges beats a professional one lacking in emotion.
It's this idea that led me to choosing a Comic-Sans like font for the website. Love it or hate it —it's distinctive and playful, and that's what it means to be a "Mindless Blob." —Silly, rough around the edges, but living life, from moment to moment.
